      @@are3287 Fun fact: Bram Stoker first used the word undead in its modern meaning for his novel Dracula. Since its first usage in modern English referred to vampires, who die and become reanimated, vampires are indeed undead.
      Another interesting thing is the fact that zombies are the direct literary descendants of vampires. An old novel called I Am Legend (adapted into films called The Last Man on Earth, The Omega Man, and I Am Legend respectively), shows the precursors of zombies. The creatures in the book have an aversion to sunlight (a vampiric weakness created by film, as novel Dracula and folkloric vampires could walk in daylight), had to be killed with stakes to the heart, had conscious, intelligent minds, and ate people. They were also called vampires in the book. However, they shambled around in global hordes, were contagious, and were the result of scientific causes rather than supernatural causes, much like zombies. Night of the Living Dead is where zombies became distinct from vampires, and I Am Legend paved the way for the genre. But zombies and vampires have much more in common than most people know.

    Wait this actually brings up a good question, what’s the etymology (word origin) of zombie?
    Wikipedia: The English word "zombie" is first recorded in 1819, in a history of Brazil by the poet Robert Southey, in the form of "zombi", actually referring to the Afro-Brazilian rebel leader named Zumbi and the etymology of his name in "nzambi". The Oxford English Dictionary gives the origin of the word as Central African and compares it to the Kongo words "nzambi" (god) and "zumbi" (fetish).
    In Haitian folklore, a zombie (Haitian French: zombi, Haitian Creole: zonbi) is an animated corpse raised by magical means, such as witchcraft.
    The concept has been popularly associated with the religion of voodoo, but it plays no part in that faith's formal practices.
    How the creatures in contemporary zombie films came to be called "zombies" is not fully clear. The film Night of the Living Dead made no spoken reference to its undead antagonists as "zombies", describing them instead as "ghouls" (though ghouls, which derive from Arabic folklore, are demons, not undead). Although George Romero used the term "ghoul" in his original scripts, in later interviews he used the term "zombie". The word "zombie" is used exclusively by Romero in his script for his sequel Dawn of the Dead (1978), including once in dialog. According to George Romero, film critics were influential in associating the term "zombie" to his creatures, and especially the French magazine Cahiers du Cinéma. He eventually accepted this linkage, even though he remained convinced at the time that "zombies" corresponded to the undead slaves of Haitian voodoo as depicted in White Zombie with Bela Lugosi.

    • @Eikinkloster
      @Eikinkloster 년 전

      The earliest contact I remember having with zombies was in the 1988 movie The Serpent and the Rainbow, based on a non-fiction book that describes the supposedly real case of zombification of a Clairvius Narcisse in Haiti. The story goes that he had died and been revived and kept mentally controlled with voodoo magic. Almost two decades later they stopped giving him the voodoo drugs and he recovered his sentience.
      He wasn't undead in any practical sense. He was eating and aging normally. Still, this might have been the story that ignited the zombie craze in the West, as it has the elements of returning from death and being in a blank mental state.

    Like first a cloud of neurotoxic powder blows through a small town and everyone who was outdoors at the time develops spongiform encephalopathy in their prefrontal cortex. They first become passive and compliant, grow apathetic to the point of catatonia, and finally reactivate and become capable of sudden violence as their empathy and inhibitions are lost. The causes and effects are similar to the original zombie concept from Haiti (where a voodoo sorcerer used neurotoxins to create compliant slaves) and the affected townsfolks behavior and appearance deteriorates to the point they earn the moniker.
    But then it turns out the cloud was a harbinger of an alien invasion. Vermiform parasites spreading via fluid through mucous membranes and burrow into the brain. The human hosts act with seemingly mindless violence and the condition spreads by bites. We'd want to call them zombies because that quickly communicates the danger and mode of operation even though the human host never died. We'd also want to start referring to the first group as something else because they're no longer as much of a threat but their presence should be noted. Something like sleepers/sleepwalkers or maybe veggies would be appropriate. Someone coming from the catatonic rural outskirts to get help from someone in the 'burbs would have to be caught up on the nomenclature of this new threat.
    The carnage left behind by the human / zombie conflict is gathered up by another entity with much more decided purpose. Behind the second wave of violence the invaders direct sleepers and hosts to build a factory of horrors in either a church's graveyard, a hospital's morgue, or a bloody slaughterhouse. Fresh bodies join the multitude of old corpses found at this facility. Here flesh is crafted and reanimated with alien medicine to create perfect, golem-like vessels to replace the stumbling, shambling hosts and limp, languid shells. These reanimated dead would technically be closer to the cultural definition of zombie, but their role in the invasion doesn't involve mindlessly attacking or infecting others, so they get a different moniker as well.
    To recap: _sleepwalkers_ fit the original definition of zombie as a mindless human being but they were always alive and don't particularly behave like a zombie; the _zombie hosts_ perform the function of zombies as understood in popular media but they have an outside alien puppeteer which is uncommon in such stories; and _reanimated vessels_ fit the common understanding of zombies as the undead but the threat they pose is unlike that of a "zombie outbreak" as popularly told.

      Agreed: Undead, dead, ghouls, lazars, corpses, vampires... the problem is not that they avoided zombie, it’s that they chose “walkers,” over many other historically used terms for very similar ideas that people would likely reach for, first.
      Fun fact: in arguably the first modern zombie story, I Am Legend, author Richard Matheson used “vampire.”

    • @albertjordan3249
      @albertjordan3249 3 년 전 +206

      The idea is that zombies in their world are novel, so people in that world have to figure out their behavior, how the infection is transmitted, how to put them down, etc. If they used the term "zombie" it would imply that they have seen zombies in popular media just like we have and would know to shoot them in the head, that the infection is transmitted through bites etc. It also gives greater flexibility in terms of what the rules for the zombies are... they can add novel features without disrupting the audience's notion of what a zombie is.
      None of it is technically necessary, we all know what zombies are, and you can tell through context whether or not zombies are something that existed in the culture prior to the outbreak/apocalypse based on how characters react, and that not every piece of media is going to have zombies that behave the same way, but its a way to set up some distance that some authors/writers/etc like to employ.

    Yeah, honestly I never understood why some movies refuse to use the word “zombie.” That would be like a vampire movie that refuses to say “vampire.” It honestly just seems strange. And it’s not like there would have to be a pre-existing name for them before the fictional apocalypse. The word zombie just describes someone who acts in a lifeless or brain-dead manner; mostly unresponsive and only semi-conscious. That’s a perfectly valid description of how a zombie behaves, so why not just call them zombies?! LMAO! 🤣

      The reason movies and games refuse to use the word zombie is called "genre blindness". It means that in their world, zombies prior to the events in question have never existed. They're unaware of the entire concept, and that "allows" them to be unaware of the situation and how to approach the issue. Googling the term will give you better explanations and details about the subject.

Sometimes I think "What if I hadn't taken a chance and clicked on this video?" or "What if I hadn't been scrolling through the KRplus home page at midnight when I should have already been asleep by then?" The implications these questions present send shivers down my spine. I shudder to think what could have been: a life without Joel Haver.

      In the series finale, all the characters have been overrun. One by one they are bitten or devoured. With his dying breath, Daryl detonates the napalm charges rigged throughout the compound, releasing the entire hoard and the doomed survivors from material existence. As the last shifting corpse drags itself toward the exit, a door opens. Footsteps are heard followed by a shot of a cowboy boot stomping through the charred skull, ceasing its movement. The camera pans up to Rick Grimes face, who looks directly at the audience.
      “Fucking zombies.”
