* On a sidenote, It's actually hard to translate that line because while it means "Mind your own business," it sounds much more rude and unnatural. People say it now because of this movie, but it's a very weird sentence in Korean language and shows off the quirky nature of the character.
Anyway, when asked how Park came up with that line (Park was the co-writer for its script), here's what Park said (0:11) "It was something I actually experienced. Before 'JSA'(which was Park's first commercially successful film), whenever I presented my script to the studios, they would reject me. Back then, someone I knew told me that shouldn't write such stories in scenarios, and that I should write 'soft' stories that the public likes. That's when I said that sentence. Those were the most violent words in my life"
Jung Suh-kyung (the lady next to Park who wrote the script with Park) says, "For the longest time, there was just a blank space where that line eventually ended up being. We thought there should be a crucial line there, but couldn't think of it. That's when the director (Park) came up with it."
Yoon Jong-shin (The guy in glasses) "Since then, that sentence became a go-to phrase for nosy people. It became a phrase used in everyday life."
Jung, "I still use it, especially at home."
Yoon, "And most say it in Lee Young-ae's (the actress) tone.
Park, "She made the line so much better."
Yoon, "(To Park) What's your favorite line?"
Park, "It may not sound like much but... Geumja (Lee's character in the movie) visits the bakery she works at and asks for an advance. The owner answers "No advance."(* this is also a line that's hard to translate. In Korean, the word "impossible" sounds like the backward version of word "advance", so the phrase sounds kinda funny)
Yoon, "So it's a dad joke."
Jung, "We were in Danyang, sitting across each other with our computers writing this. And after he wrote that line, he must have cracked up for a good 20-30 minutes. He was like, 'This is hilarious and so well-written."
Park, "(I was like) This is it!"
