This is what I like about Jo Joβs Bizarre Adventures. The characters usually keep the rules of how their stand works close to their chest and leave the enemy to figure it out, unless their extremely arrogant, in which case they get beaten super easily.
As arrogant as Dio was he never actually explained he could freeze time, which allowed him to take out most of the main characters before they even figured it out.
If it wasn't for a couple of key sacrifices, Dio would have been the end of the Stardust Crusade.

No joke, this is genuinely one of the main reasons why Dio was so hard to beat. He legit just didn't explain shit until half the crew was out of commission
Half the fight was just "What the Fuck does The World do?" It was amazing.
If I remember right, he didn't even have to explain it. One figured it out and managed to give a hint before they died, another caught onto the hint and managed to tell the main protagonist before Dio could shut him up. But even then, Spoiler:
If Jotaro's fully awakened ability wasn't the same as his, he'd have died. Jotaro won because his stand was the same kind as Dio's and could pull the same bullshit.
Our headcannon is that Jotaro doesn't have the same type of stand, he just has any abillity he believes he does. Before he was told that it had a limit of six feet, he could reach things like RC cars and beer/soda. He could only stop time because DIO told him that he could.

That's one of the things that make jojo great is that a lot of the battles are challenging at first due to the ambiguity of abilities.
The only two examples where it makes sense are both from HunterxHunter. The first one is knuckle when he just wanted to stall for time for his ability to activate and the second one is Chrollo in Manga for Hisoka because Chrollo was that confident that he will win. Because if you predict one part of his plan incorrectly, it is impossible to keep up.

Don't explain your ability and then run at your opponent, they will be too afraid to attack because they don't know what you're capable of and that will make them susceptible to setting up the full effects of your ability, so the battle is over before it even begins. Because for all they know, it could be a counter-based ability so retaliating blindly could be fatal for them. They have no choice but to defend so you can set up your Trap style techniques and p r o f i t.

Yeah even for the protagonist. Usually when they donβt know about the villains power they get they ass stomped 95% of the time and get saved by plot armor until they get stronger and learn more about the villain.
Meanwhile, in Jojo fights, barely anyone actually explains how their Stands work. Part of the awesomeness is figuring it out and then solving a counter to it.

I like how jujutsu kaisen handles this, lying to the villain about their abilities and getting an up on them.

This is why Dio was such a good villain, he kept his ability secret and because of it everything involving him had an aura of mystery like with polnareff and the stairs
And then you find the ability, and stop to think what exactly happened in those stairs

Tbh that's how "smart villains" in anime usually work. They aren't the strongest, but as long as no one knows about their abilities, they can clap ass cheeks as many times as they want.
