- Hello friends! Bad makeup science is back! Wait no, not bad makeup science -- potentially good makeup science! Or, at least okay makeup science.
So a few months ago while I was jonesing to melt something, I encountered this book -- called Make It Up, by Marie Rayma -- which details how to make pretty much every beauty and body product you can think of, custom and from scratch. And being the lipstick fiend that I am, I decided to follow one of her lipstick recipes to make myself a custom lipstick (color and base) from scratch. What do you think of my final color? What product should we tackle next?

My husband and I don’t watch sports, but we kinda felt like we were those people yelling at a game on TV when we were going, “BLUE!!! You need to add some blue!!!” 😂
But how much blue that is the question. I think she should have done instead of replace yellow with purple replace yellow with blue and make the red oxide all red oxide(blue) then maybe zombie pink would happen.

Or some really subtle fine green glitter for an eerie shifting effect that you can’t quite detect but feels unsettling… maybe leave some of the yellow but just a tiny bit? And a little more white but also a tiny bit more violet and blue…. Is maybe what i would try, haha 😂 sometimes you don’t know exactly what colors will look like until you just do it. Seriously considering trying this, it looks so fun. If only i didn’t have a billion nagging half finished projects laying around already 😅🤪

Honestly I feel like you should do a whole series of making your own makeup and then testing against store bought, like have it face off (haha) against a drug store brand, then a nicer brand, then designer brand, etc. that would be a lot of fun to watch!

I think making makeup from scratch will never have a chance against a store bought or high end product. Those are designed in labs and factories for masses with QA testing and stuff.

also calling it hotdog literally a few seconds before is pretty funny too, considering how it lines up.
Fun fact: Jojoba oil is actually super close to the oils we produce naturally, hence why a lot of beauty products use that oil as a carrier oil, and why it’s also used super often in nail oils (basic recipe is same amount of vitamin e oil and jojoba oil), because it soaks in super easily, and helps carry things like vitamin e directly into the skin or nail bed.
Really? I wonder why I'm allergic to that and not also my skin oils.

Saf, I'd suggest a new lipstick test: Hair getting in face test. The other day I was outside in the wind with my hair loose and I was wearing lipstick... my hair kept sticking to my lipstick and it actually transferred to the rest of my face like tiny single hair brush strokes

@@lisabaker3233 there's this thing that's called color theory, which is basically how colors interact with one another. For the dead mauve she wanted, another description would be a very pale and desaturated bluish-purple. To make it pale and desaturated you need a whole lot of white. To make the blue and purple you can just pick those and mix them together, adding more red for warmth or more blue for cool. Black is a very, very strong color, so adding it can muddy colors and take away from any other addition. If you need to darken a color it would probably be better to use less white instead of adding black. If you need to desaturate a color, for example make a bright cerulean blue into a navy, you can add the color's opposite color. This is the color wheel you learn in school: blue vs. orange, yellow vs. purple, red vs. green. However, due to the sheer amount of white in her color, she likely didn't need to use any opposing colors to desaturate her shade. Thus, she probably could have just added the same amount of white and then mixed blue and purple to get her color. Adding yellow, orange, red, or most browns, is going to warm the color up.

As someone who lives in Arizona we have cochineal bugs just everywhere. They feed on cacti and look like fuzzy white blobs. This insect is used extensively in the beauty and food industry for the red pigment it produces even to this day.

~fun~ fact: jojoba “oil” isn’t actually an oil it’s more like a plant wax that’s liquid at room temp that’s why it’s so shelf-stable, it won’t actually go rancid in the way that oils do.

Also in terms of Candelilla wax is one of the worst made and exploited products for makeup use. The working conditions to create it are deadly and many lose limbs and their lives from the acids used to make it without protection given to them. As an artist it definitely takes a little to understand how to mix colors. It’s really cool to see that in the context of creating lipsticks and then to also consider how that will look with various skin tones.
