- Today is my birthday, so I am going to indulge myself and make sandwich of very recent history. Specifically, The Tomato from Chef Mason Hereford’s famed New Orleans joint Turkey and the Wolf. Ever since I got my hands on this book I’ve been jonesin’ to make this (and the other sandwiches in the book, frankly) but with all the sandwiches I eat on a daily basis, making one outside of Sandwiches of History doesn’t happen to often. So today’s the day, baby. Strap in, because this is not your typical tomato sandwich.

I remember Larry King interviewing Julia Child and asking her what her favorite food was. She replied, a tomato sandwich.

@@SandwichesofHistory not really, I guess they just can't really grow to their full potential here, they're either imported or force grown in poly tunnels I think! Having tomatoes in Mediterranean countries is a big treat to us haha

I grew up eating sliced tomates on a really good and freshly baked bread.
Doesn't need more than tomatoes, bread, butter and some salt. But the version you did looks SO good, gonna try that one too tomorrow!

I'm a year late but saw this (the first video I've seen of yours) and realized I had all the ingredients to give it a try. SO MUCH FLAVOR. I'm totally having it again! Never thought about how much flavor you can drag out of a tomato slice with dill but it was magical

I have never seen a yellow tomate that is "normal" size

this sandwich looks so tasty although I am glad you did not add meat to it as it was already vegetarian and some of the sandwiches from this channel have greatly improved upon my former just thick wholegrain bread between a thin slice of cheese

Seeing this reminded me of a tomato sandwich That I've had that my grandpa introduced to me. The sandwich I'm talking about consists of just Mayonnaise, Sliced tomato, salt and pepper and it tastes really good! Now, the thing is. is that my grandpa used Tomatoes he grew from H̲i̲s̲ garden. and the ones from my grandpa's garden are thousands of times better than the ones you'd find in store shelves and displays.
Store bought tomatoes do work fine and most of the time I do make them with the tomatoes I buy from the store. and I think you should use some white bread with that too...
now the thing is... I don't like tomatoes! (or at least, I didn't like tomatoes before...) and This thing just tastes amazing with tomatoes! I'm the kind of guy to hate tomatoes but love ketchup so maybe I've always liked tomatoes and I've just been eating them wrong. I don't know. the sandwich is tasty though!
I've heard from many folks about their grandparents eating the same sandwich. And to a person, everyone has said they used tomatoes they grew themselves. Which means that'll never happen for me since I'm terrible at gardening. Fortunately, here in California, we get heirloom tomatoes year-round (though they are infinitely better in the summer). I highly recommend you give this sandwich a go this summer. It is so good!

Are you aware that the downtown Los Angeles library has menus from the past restaurants of famous Hollywood and Los Angeles that are stored at that location but can be viewed online? Some of the menus actually have recipes inside the menus for sandwiches. Such as Wilshire bullocks, which was a big hoop you do in the 30s and 40s For women having lunches inside their restaurant. You might have to call them directly to figure out how to gain access to the menus online. Cheers!

I’m in college, I live off the food bank, and all my money goes to rent. I was rejected for federal aid, yada yada yada. The point is, this is not a joke-
When I first saw this video, I made it a personal goal that I was going to, someday soon, have the money to buy the ingredients to make this sandwich. And I’ve been striving for it ever since. Haven’t made it yet, but it’s literally on my goals wall in my shitty apartment.
