Cheese and Onion Bake Sandwich (1974) on Sandwiches of Historyโฃ

- ๊ฒ์์ผ 2024. 03. 19.
- Yes, today weโre finally tackling the Cheese Onion Bake Sandwich from Williamsโ Sandwich Recipes of 1974. Despite the fact that the sandwich is indeed baked for a spell, the d is not missing from the name. Hey, it was, like, the 70s, man. If nothing else, we know from Tatyo Cheese and Onion crisps that the combo of cheese and onion is quite tasty. As with other recipes from this book, we have to pour a mix of milk and egg over the top of it and bake it for while. Does that magically transform the sandwich? Turn on, tune in, and find out.

A lot of the 70's was a 5.
This comment is pin worthy ๐
I loved the 1970's. In High School. Driving around listening to rock on the radio. Watching they guys work on cars on Saturday. And going to the (yes) Disco. It's a 9 for me.
So true!!!
@@melissalambert7615thatโs crazy. My dad wasnโt even born yet
that must be one of the more interesting sandwich ideas I've ever seen
Barry, you're a national treasure. I'm so glad i found this channel!
Thank you so much!
"It's the French-toasty-meh-sandwich. I'll give it a five." Perfectly scored, Barry, and your descriptions are so good, I've become pretty adept at guessing your plussed-up scores. On the dot today. Oh - I have to start putting chips on more sandwiches.
That's a savoury bread pudding.
After watching 3 episodes, I'm realizing that if you handed someone from the 30s, 40s, or 70s, a loaded Firehouse sub, their head would explode from the concept.
Haha! 100%
I would have been hard pressed to think of a way to salvage that!
Fascinating sandwich. I'll probably try to make my own version
Savory French toast, interesting.
As a kid I ate mine with ketchup. I still do occasionally ... or with marmite. Savoury french toasts is the way to go.
Looks alot like a single serving of cheese strata, which I love.
Loved the video description above
Thanks!
I have always thought in the back of my mind, cheese and onions.
Just started watching this channel and I bet this Buckaroo has forgotten more things about sandwiches than I will know in my lifetime. Nice.
I have forgotten so much about everything lol. Welcome!
as soon as I saw "onion bake" i was in!
edit: finished watching it and now idk, lol. i was on board until it called for the weird eggy custard and baking it for 35(!) minutes
My go-to for all things cheese, egg, and bread is the Welsh rarebit soufflรฉ recipe from those lovely Brits, the Two Fat Ladies. It may sound odd, but it can hit the spot when youโre hangry but the fridge is looking a bit empty. Just know youโll be in a food coma for an hour or two after eating.
All of this effort for an American cheese and onion sandwich that you have to eat with a fork.
Love guessing what the plus up will be, i expected some pickled jalepenos.. but not the Aioli crisps!
Now this is the plus up we all want!
Interesting idea. Looks good, keep it up Barry!
Itโs fine Itโs fine and in my mind I see Barry in the house burning down meme. Way to take one for the team!!
Way too much milk. Plus up was fun. BTW: I like old cookbooks and often search for those you use. This one is hard to find. Only one site had a copy and it was all marked up/highlighted/damaged. So not my choice. Point is - it's a keeper!
this sandwich is a year older than I am. I'm 48.
Iโm now glad I wasnโt around in the โ70s.
Eating this sounds like sensory hell.
Needs more American Cheeseยฎ.
i wouldโve gone full breakfast and added bacon or sausage but i know how you are steadfast in not adding meats to sandwiches that donโt have itโฆ
This wouldnโt work for me, Iโd be filling up on snacks during the 35 minutesโ baking time.
like a savory french toast? but baked?
What an odd sandwich. But it does leave itself open to a wide variety of Plus Ups(tm)!
Probably need a smaller container- maybe fold up some foil
Iโm assuming that since youโre only supposed to use 1/4 of the custard that itโs probably meant for 4 sandwiches.
Bingo!
What do you do with the rest of the custard, since only a quarter of it went on the sandwich?
Itโs in the fridge. Not sure what Iโm gonna do with it.
SANDWICHES
Listen. This is a winning concept it's just a weird execution. If you french toasted it instead of baking that could change a lot. (I'd also do a stronger tasting cheese to play with the onion better but that's a me thing.)
You mix in like an entire cup of milk and then only use a quarter of it? What are you supposed to do with the remaining 3/4 of milk with raw egg mixed in?
Iโm assuming itโs meant for 4 sandwiches, I donโt know if it says that that in the recipe but it seems logical.
Yeah it was easier to make the full recipe for the mixture than quarter a raw egg. The recip makes 4 total.
Thatโs not a sandwich, itโs a casserole
Two slice of bread thoโฆ
:)
seems like too much milk
1:18 Let's give this what? What??? A rest? Up? Away? He didn't say the thing and now I'm distressed ๐
I would say more than a little bit questionable....
What? No
That is the laziest French Toast I have ever seen.
Sounds like a stoner sandwich
