    Today I remove the engine from my burnt Ferrari F355 Spider and see how bad the damage really is. As it turns out, pretty bad.

      You have never removed a burned engine, plastic clips, wiring harnesses and fasteners all work the same, different types etc. Working on a Ferrari is straightforward and conventional. Engine wise a Mazda Rotary or Subaru Boxer is more "exotic" and this F355 is the conventional 5 speed not the F1.

  • @totaltwit
    @totaltwit 5 년 전

    When you showed us the melted rad fan and fried wiring harness, my heart sank. I personally would have gone to a dark room to repent. However I'm impressed by your optimism and enthusiasm. I had a moment of gloom when you showed us the timing belts, a ray of hope was your clever comment on the timing should still be right so no valve damage. I think also many of us are interested in the mechanical designs F use, I always wanted to see up close these top engines from the inside. I will await the next vid.

    You've got your work cut out for you on this one. Going to be a fun project. It's actually pretty amazing with your videos because up until you started sharing the information with us and making videos no one except experienced mechanics has probably ever seen these engine parts. How many Ferraris out there have ever had this level of damage and been restored by someone in their garage? You're probably the first dude ever to document this stuff in video format.
    Keep up the great work Tavarish. Looking forward to your future videos.

    Even if the cylinders are flooded, it doesn’t mean the engine isn’t salvageable. I really can’t imagine anything about this engine that could make it never run again.
    Worst case scenario, pistons and crank is dead, but those are still cheaper to replace than buying a whole new engine. Even if the only thing undamaged is the engine block, it’s still worth restoring

    • @electricsnut
      @electricsnut 5 년 전

      broggerdk Petrol burns at over 950c which means the motor got dam hot, way hotter than it can ever handle. Then it was hosed down with cold water which would have distorted it and also tempered the metal making them brittle.

It's a very common issue, and as Tavarish told us, its very common to move the hoseclamp in another direction. How would you feel if you burnt down your friends car, and you just knew you couldn't have done anything to not make it happen...

    Do you have any concern regarding structural integrity? Usually in a fire the metal expands and then contracts during the cooling. Are you worried about cracking, bowing, or change in the metallurgy of the frame or structural components?

    Really. If you would take the engine totally apart, including the gears and all, clean it totally, the metal parts (even pistons and so on) the engine will work. Water damage isn't that bad. Salted water is though. Plus if you take it apart like that you can clean and/or check every part which needs to be replaced or not. I think your subscribers would like such video's 😁 I know I would!

      It will give so much rest in your head if you inspect the whole engine yourself. If you don't, the engine might run for some miles but might stall after that... Then what? We're talking a Ferrari engine here: a) it's easy to take apart en put back together b) it's a Ferrari engine... You check that down to the last bearing... Especially in this condition...

    As long as it wasn't running when the water was being sprayed, and by the looks of the timing belt it wasn't running, even if the water got in the cylinder it just needs to be cleaned up and it's good. If it hydrolocked and bent parts it may be ok to rebuild just need more parts, which may be cheaper to buy another engine at that point and sell the good parts out of the old engine to recoup the cost.

    • @Pheatan
      @Pheatan 5 년 전 +1

      The thing is the rapid heating from the fire paired with the rapid cooling from the water is going to warp or crack parts of the block. No matter how well an engines built doing this will destroy it. If it was just a garage find car with water in the engine, absolutely just clean it out resurface the walls and rebuild it, but the fire changes the problems dramatically

    • @ironymatt

      @@muskokamike127 If you hone the cylinder walls as you would in a rebuild, I don't think pitting will be a problem, however warping maybe, bearing fused to the block and journals having to be bored and oversized is a possibility and can be done easily at a good machine shop. Any rebuild you want to last should at least be taken to a machine shop and have everything you're going to reuse checked for warping, cracks, and wear. But I agree with the race engine theory.
