And when she thought she finally had the chance (“Back when I was living for the hope of it all”) she didn’t want to let it go. She fought for her love even though she probably knew that James was dating Betty. Despite that, she was hoping that James would be hers finally because she’s been aching and loving him for a long time already. So maybe it’s an unrequited love for her in the beginning but when James finally came to her (cheating), she couldn’t really do anything except let herself fall, and take the chance.

The fact that you "want" is enough because you don't know better. You don't know that it needs partnership, reciprocity, trust etc.

Last August I was in love with an American boy who came to my country as an exchange student. It was love at first sight. I was too shy and it took 2 months to go out with him, only to know that he also liked me from the start. I fell so hard and so did he. Head over heals. We didn't officially date bc we knew he's leaving soon, but instead we agreed that we should make the most of time left we had. We saw each other almost every day, going to a fireworks festival, theater, a beautiful hill to see the sunset and so on... Nobody has never made me feel this happy. Really.
On one sunny day in August, he left to the US. We'd been talking and texting for quite a while since then, but 2 days ago he told me he couldn't keep on going any longer bc it's too tough to be separated and wanting each other this hard. ...yes I understand his feeling. We made a mutual decision to be back to friends and gonna check up on each other sometimes.
I've known this song since the day it came out, but it has never hit me this hard. We actually went to a beach by car and I said "get in the car" in that morning. Now I cannot hold tears when listening to this song. Sometimes life circumstances don't let us be together, but now I wish him nothing but the success for the future. And I'm greatful for the purest memory I have ever had and everything he did for me. One day I want to work in the US and he said he wanna come back to Japan for grad school, I still hope our love comes back.

I cry nonstop whenever I hear this song. Mine wasn't August, but March. Every lyric here hit my heart, happened in my August/March story. I tried to change for the better for him, cancelled plans for him, hoped we'd meet at school and hang out at home and be twisted in bedsheets. Wishing I could write my name on his back. Thought I had him but chose to be friends. I will forever be in lost in the memories of August/March even if he never will become mine. It has been 12 years since that love story. I've never gotten over it, just stacked it in my subconscious. Whenever I hear this song I remember it all vividly, and cry. So many questions left unanswered. It's still a memory I cherish, because I knew I LOVED truly.

Looking back, I'd say that this is the strongest song in all of folklore. Not the best metaphorically or lyrically, but the feeling of just being abandoned and regarded as a mere 'summer thing' punches the guts in every listen.

I think I'm also an August girl, for the simple fact that I was the second choice of the person who, at that moment, I thought was mine. It happened in December, however, it lasted as long as summer love. He had just left his girlfriend, and became my boyfriend the same day they broke up. He never got over her, and I had to put up with being his second choice for almost a month. We broke up when he found out that he always loved the other girl, and not me. He was never mine.

We call her 'August girl' just like James calls her 'that summer thing', we talk about her like the people at James and Betty's school will talk about her. She's faceless, nameless and will continue to be known that way, sadly. The stories get passed down by listeners of this song, like how folklore is passed down communities and people inherit names like 'the mad woman' 'the summer girl'.. the same thing happens within our fandom. We call her August girl. She doesn't have a name, she's forgotten, a distant memory that's slowly but surely fading. The song does exactly what folklore is intended to do.

I really like the perspective Taylor has here. Instead of making this character the villain she's allowing her to tell her side of the story. She's not innocent but she didn't seduce James or force him to cheat. That narrative only really happens in movies and it's just a way of excusing men for their behavior. The same way women in film only cheat because their s.o. is abusive.
