    I think a lot of people get confused as to why chinese is always the one that sounds rly different... but it’s not a hard concept AT ALL. If you guys notice, nearly every word in these vids are used by korean or Japanese as a loan word, meaning there isn’t technically the same word in that language (Japanese/korean)... they just use the eng word and change the pronunciation (think: “cupcake” “tiktok” etc). In chinese though, there are almost zero loan words from english. Chinese almost always has their own word for any English word. For example cupcake is not “cupcake” with a Chinese accented pronunciation, but it is 杯子 bei zi = cup 蛋糕 dan gao= cake (so: “bēi zi dàn gao”, instead of smthng that sounds similar to “cupcake”).

      The other 3 languages (japanese kinda has an alphabet, not really) have alphabets. Transcription is easy.

      I think the more interesting thing is that China does a literal translation but Japan and Korea don't. Both languages have words for cup and cake (bread) and could have one.

    • @eliconti8388
      @eliconti8388 3 년 전 +31

      clmbheat.322 I’m not sure how the gaining of new words works in China, but where I’m from the analyse the word, the meaning and the usage and then decide whether adding it to the vocabulary or not. Whoever decides these things in China they obviously make sure that the language is kept and not influenced by English or other languages.

    • @kt6570
      @kt6570 3 년 전 +12

      thank you. Like do people forget that Chinese has no alphabet? we literally put sounds together to make them sound something..

    • @testxxxx123
      @testxxxx123 3 년 전 +12

      Literal transliteration will result in weird and unnatural words in Chinese, unless the translation is 2-3 characters. So there are still some loan words from English into Chinese vocabulary, e.g. 沙发/sofa, 咖啡/coffee, micphone/麦克风. But longer than that, it will sound weird and no longer making sense in communication and will be replaced by meaningful translation instead.

    I love how clear and knowledgeable Jin Ming is with the meaning behind the Chinese words. It’s really interesting!! I think it’s so cool that so many words, although they sound different are like direct translations from other languages. Maybe it’s because of the writing system? Idk it’s cool either way:))

    • @lordesirloin6015
      @lordesirloin6015 3 년 전 +20

      This is because Chinese is an ideographic language. Chinese people need to know the meaning of a word to understand it. So in China there is always sense-for-sense translation instead of transliteration, because the meaning of words in Chinese people’s mind is easier to understand than their pronunciation. We don’t know what that thing is if we only know the pronunciation but not the meaning.

    • @Apocalypse_41

      Exactly! And usually some words are translated differently in Mainland/Hong Kong/Macao/taiwan, like “PoketMonster”, besides “神奇宝贝”, it’s also called “口袋妖怪”(literally means poketmonster) or “宝可梦”(pronounced like poketmonster).

    For those of you wondering about the "F" situation:
    The Japanese sound that is romanized as "f" is not the same as English's "f". The "Japanese f", "English f", and the "h" sound are all produced in a similar manner, which is why there's some confusion.

    • @mou3206
      @mou3206 3 년 전 +2

      actually no matter you type hu or fu, you get the same word(ふ). Japanese wont pout when they say ふ, imagine blowing a candle in a gentle and relaxed way. Remember dont pout, then you will properly get the correct ふ.(the ふ that Japanese pronounce)
      Sorry for my bad English.🙇

      @@kean6577 well, i started learning in school, though ive only done one year in school then i downloaded both duolingo and lingodeer to help. i prefer lingodeer because its easier to understand and you have the option to turn off pinyin/hanzi or keep both on. ive also began watching multiple chinese dramas since the fact that its the normal way of talking its sped up and it gets you to actually try and pick up what theyre saying. i also recommend looking up certain cultural quirks like why the call older people uncle and aunt, it helps a lot 👍

    I like both Jin Ming and Vai I guess but if I really wanted to learn chinese words I'd say Jin Ming is a better translator cuz he does sound like he grew up in China and explains each word really well (I speak mandarin too) whereas Vai makes for some awesome content!

    mouth wash -> enxaguante bucal
    Tik Tok -> chiqui Toque (this is just the sound)
    Treadmill -> esteira
    Pop corn -> pipoca
    Netflix -> Nechiflix (again, how it sounds)
    Airpods -> fones de ouvido or just fone.
    Monster -> monstro (sounds like 'monshtro')

    Juice -> suco (but this is only for liquids made of fruits)

    The translation for pokemon in Chinese is a little different from what Jin ming provided. 神奇 translates more as something magical or mystical as 神 refers to something that's godly and 奇 means to be astonished. 宝贝 in this case means "treasure" although in modern Chinese culture we do use 宝贝 to say "babe" or "baby".
    Tdlr: pokemon in Chinese means "mystical treasures", not "amazing babies".
    Edit: there are also two other names for pokemon besides 神奇宝贝,there's 口袋妖怪 (which literally translates to pocket monster) and 宝可梦 (which sounds similar to pokemon)
