@@WoofyMcDoodle no i don't mean that they are literally pulling a AOM here being historical and mythology at the same time that's the reason I love age of mythology and the fact that it was my first RTS game i ever played.

kinda. but aom giants and cylcopses were a bit different. wonder if there will be colossus later via flc or something medua, hydra and colossus were one of my most fav units in aom - but i always missed griffons there ^^

Greek artwork can be pretty difficult to interpret, and I suppose the larger size fits more with the size of the other monsters.

That's why he is the KING Griffin

Monsters in art often aren't depicted at size the stories imply them to be.

The lesser griffins aren't that big to be honest the wings just make them appear to be larger than they actually are.

i am totally for the colossus thing but i would pref the chimeara more over neman lion as a legendary monster. nemean lion could be more a standard recruitable tier 3 unit or something imo

@@klavicus2276 The Nemean Lion was basically invulnerable though. Heracles could only defeating by using its own claws. This also made Heracles almost as invulnerable as Achilles as he would wear the impenetrable pelt of the lion, which was better protection than any mortal armor.

@@klavicus2276 The body stretchers at a few points, the limbs clipped into the body and last thing I saw was the beak looked like a toucan's rather than an eagle's. I'd say most of these problems are only going to be a problem if you like getting screen shots or are an animator your self, that said it is odd to me the Warhammer one doesn't have those problems making me wonder if the two teams are not permitted to help each other.

having the forelegs be bird talons is a more modern interpretation. bronze age art of griffins (which is what would be relavant to a bronze age based game) showed them with lion paws on their front legs

I think that one of the reasons it's because the units in Aom are terrestrial or aereal but they are never terretrial AND aereal.
Having a griffin only terrestrial or only aereal seems a little dumb.

You can find them in scenario editor although they are not airborne.

I found this in the wiki: "We cut the griffon because we would have had to invest a lot of R&D into a flying unit that had a ground attack. Having a griffon rider did seem to get too close to fantasy. I guess he could have spat or dropped rocks or something."

@Ian Yoder I’m not familiar enough with myths about the Amazon’s to say clearly, but they are certainly the most mythical faction in the game. A great discussion I listened to once brought up how in Greek myths, the land of the Amazon’s always existed at the edge of the know world. As their known world expanded, the Amazon’s were always just over the next horizon.
I’m sure you’re familiar with the myth of how they would surgically remove one breast so they could fire bows better. That’s one thing that comes to mind of how they could alter the model’s. Perhaps having a closer look at the myths that involve them would reveal more that could be done.

@Ian Yoder I don’t disagree with any of the points you raise. I would feel a little, uggh, about mutilating even digital models for such a small payoff. As I said, they’re the most Mythological faction of the entire game, it would be interesting if CA can do something to reflect this in Mythos mode.
As for historical mode, I think CA should consider either removing the Amazon’s entirely or drastically overhauling them, making them a society of men and women(and units split with both) with a culture that’s a mixture of Scythian & Caucasian influences, and a focus on goddesses and matriarchal rule. This would be very interesting to see.

@Ian Yoder I vaguely recall that there was a theory that there may have existed a matriarchal society before the Bronze Age in the areas north of the Black Sea and Caucasus Mountains. Memories of such a thing could have persisted in the oral tradition into the Amazon’s Legends.

@Ian Yoder Ha, you’re right about that horizon.
I also think there would also be opportunities to use the history of the Minoans in Historical mode, as parts of their history possibly served as inspiration for the myth of Atlantis. Santorini could feature in an Atlantis DLC.
Perhaps the Minotaur is actually a representation/holdover from Minoan culture on Crete. In historical mode the Minotaur could be represented by a unit of berserker Minoan mercenaries that go to battle in a Bull headdress and an axe.
As for the Sphinx, I think it would be interesting if there were two different species of Sphinx, or that they were siblings that were separated. Each comes to the table with slight differences reflecting their place in their different cultures.

@@klavicus2276 as a funny example of inconsistent design, esrly greek giants where:
A) Not actually giant
B) Sometimes had snakes instead of legs

@@klavicus2276 They (cyclops, minotaur) are mostly from old movies (1960-s-1970-s) about Odyssey, etc. They remind original depiction on amphoras, but not very close. However, basic anatomy is mostly canonical. Cyclops is a bit tiny, minotaur is a bit oversized. Cerberus is at least 5x oversized, he was max 1,5 meters in height. No skull-like mouth and no fiery eyes in myths. Just dog heads, like "pit fighters" subspecies. Only "dreads' on heads and tail-snake are references to original descriptions. In myths, each hair of cerberus (and tail) was a snake with head, and each was poisonous. His sister hydra is nearly perfectly recreated in game, but 2 heads are still not fully-grown (explained in CA`s hydra revival lore, which repeated my thoughts during childhood - if immortal head is released, hydra can regenerate again). Harpies are mostly fine, but shall be more bird-like (beak-like mouth). Centaurs are fine.

That would be awesome but getting a licence for that is probably pretty hard, I've heard they're really picky with who they let work with their assets, and they would be under a lot of scrutiny throughout the whole process no doubt. You've probably heard of it, but just in case, there's a mod called The Third Age for M2 Kingdoms.
