South Korea has successfully tested a rocket engine to be used on the Korea Space Launch Vehicle-2 (KSLV-2), also known as "Nuri", which is under development.
With a thundering sound and flames, a 25 meter-tall single-stage rocket is soaring into the sky.
The rocket is powered by a 75-ton thrust engine which has been locally developed. Its critical motor combustion time was 151 seconds, surpassing a goal of 140 seconds.
The rocket, launched from the Naro Space Center in the southwestern county of Goheung, reached a height of 209 kilometers and traveled for about 10 minutes before hitting the high seas southeast of the country's southern resort island of Jeju.
The successful engine test has made South Korea the world's 11th country to have the technology for such rocket engines.
The success is to further accelerate the development of the KSLV-2.
    [Lee Jin-Kyu, Vice Science Minister]
"Today, we confirmed that our technical preparations for the development of 'Nuri' (launch vehicle) are proceeding without a hitch. We have verified the flight of the 75-ton engine which is considered a core technology and the most difficult part in the development of a launch vehicle."
South Korea plans to blast the three-stage KSLV-2 that is set to put a 1.5-ton science satellite into orbit some 600 to 800 kilometer above the earth in 2021.
