He didn't have to cut his head off. He was so bent on impressing the king and onlookers that he went completely overboard. Any strike landed no matter how light would have sufficed. He was without mercy even though his opponent was defenseless. Watch the look of disappointment on the kings face and that of his mother's after the strike. This was his first failure. He was a coward.
The sound design in this movie is off the chain
I feel that I appreciate this movie more than most. It's very well done.
The Knight’s sound design reminds me of Treebeard from Two Towers and of Bootstrap Bill in Dead Man’s Chest

One opposing him must be courageous enough to give his own life, but even more courageous to not take another's without necessity.

The Headless Game was a common motif in Medieval Times.
Its not like he had to decapitate him and its kinda funny that he thought it be a good idea when he literaly said he would take the SAME blow in 1 year.Sure,he might have thought that he "didnt think of this" but come on...ya realy think he would kneel down and wait for you to cut his head if he didnt have a plan?
Unfortunately I disagree in Arthurian legends knights were seen as honorable and if you listen to the words said, "what ever is given be it a scratch on the cheek or a cut of the throat" The Green Knight is given the choice you don't need a killing blow. But as Arthur says it's only a game as well, you don't need to land a killing blow and the biggest thing about this Rhe Green Knight bends on knee, gives his neck, and turns his head...the blow will be a blind side and no honorable knight or warrior in those terms would have even picked up the sword. Threw out this story every test Gowan fails, he strikes the Green Knight, the farmer in the field whose lost his family tells him his life story and gives direction to the Green Chapel and then has to ask for compensation, he meets a lady but doesn't know how to properly behave around her and calls him on it, he encounters giants that he asks a lift from when he must mske this journey alone, he meets a nobleman and while resting in his house has a sexual encounter with his wife, and finally once he gets to the Green Knight knowing the blow will kill him he runs. After that we see a flash because he knows nothing of honor he is a bad king and the lands fall to ruin, so at that moment he then decides to let the ax fall on him and finally after seeing this that he finds honor.

Very interesting moral. Besides the King's tip, "it's just a game", Gawain because of pressure to impress all the crowd decided to not strategy think as a Ruler should do. Instead of just snap the Green Knight or hit him with the fuller part, he just went full violent not considering the obvious consequences. Amazing.

I like the way my British Literature described this scene: "So Sir Gawain lops off the Green Knights head, but the Green Knight just picks up his head and goes "Lol, see you in a year" and rides away as Sir Gawain realizes he just f'ed up"

I like how in the film, they made the Green Knight more like an ent like creature rather than just a giant green man, like in the book. But it still held true to the book!!
Shows like this give me a glimmer of hope that Hollywood can still make an meaningful movie with a very real message.
A24 is an independent studio. Not much good comes out of Hollywood
A24 isn't really Hollywood.
In video games there's triple A and indies. But also something some people refer to as AA. That's what A24 is. A middle ground between Hollywood and full on indie films imo
You aren't really familiar with art house films, are you? Movies like this are still pretty common, and lead Hollywood actors/actresses are still very happy to participate in said films even for smaller salaries because of their artistic value.

And Gawain could have not taken the bait and just simply given him a grazing blow, and he still would have gotten the Axe.

it seems to be a bit clearer in the original poem. where the knight challenges for a blow to be given to him. it seems as if he wouldn't survive such a blow. only if survives, will there be a return.

It comes from Paganism. Look it up, it's pretty interesting. Was a bit thing around the time of Arthurian legend and ties into the ideas of nature in this movie.
It symbolizes the 5 knightly virtues that king Arthur knights followed. I believe at that time the "peace symbol" was an un-cristian sign
The pentangle is not of the devil, it's more modern goths taking symbols without knowing their meaning like St. Peter's cross. The pentangle represents the 5 wounds of Christ, the 5 senses, the 5 knightly virtues and the 5 joys of Mary.
