Isn't it weird how much a persons voice changes when they speak another language. Sam's voice is much deeper when he speaks in English.
This! I've noticed that too! My mother tongue is Indonesian and English my second, I notice I speak in a lower pitch when using English. I find it amusing when I hear my fave Kpop artist speaking in English in a much lower tone than when they do Korean. Funny how things work, huh.

Here's a funny observation I found, when Germans speak English their tone almost always rises in pitch a bit, the exact opposite to Koreans haha

As an actual teacher, i don’t find Ollie to be a bad student. He asks questions to understand why and how something is and that is very important when learning and teaching !!
And his questions are very interesting. I don't learn korean offficially, I know some since I watch a lot of korean dramas and shows but I do learn more from Ollie actually. If I've ever attend any korean class, I would love to have Ollie be my classmate. It would be fun

penguin 0912 Exactly! However, while Josh does a good job at teaching him, there is more to being a successful teacher than just knowing the content. I think he should consider going to an actual korean class, as the teacher will know korean and how to teach it.
It's not that he's asking irrelevant questions... It's just that through the series (Korean speakers losing their cool teaching Ollie Korean), I suspect it has to do with the fact that this is entertainment after all, he tends to be sidetracked real quick and that frustrates the teacher (after 3-4 attempts), but again that's why people love these lessons.

외국어 하면 목소리 바뀌는 사람이 많죠. 말도 더 소프트 하게 하고. 외국사는 한국인들도 영어 할 때 목소리 마니 바뀌더라구요

올리 한국말보다 샘 영어가 더 신기하다.

Honestly, Olly's circumstances are quite unique. Usually, when one learns a second language, they learn words in the second language and the translation/the word in their first language simultaneously. In his circumstance, he's constantly bombarded with vocabulary from his work as an editor, and these words embed themselves in his mind without any actual meaning which makes it harder to attach meaning to due to how they were introduced. Even for those who are born as bilingual or polyglots, they may not have a direct translation in their head, but they understand the inherent meaning of the word themselves. Contrary to all the jokes on how Olly's an idiot, I think he's quite smart for making as much progress as he has, especially since he's past the prime period for language learning.

Honestly, I can understand why he struggles a lot in learning the language. Ollie did mention he has dyslexia, and that has definitely made learning korean not easy for him. But I admire his courage to overcome his own weakness, and not letting it stop him from doing it. I relate to it so much cause I struggle with it myself. Thank you for being an encouragement to many learners out there and also for having such a good laugh about it all.

The 쉬다 and 수다 question where one is a sh sound and the other is a s sound is because of the "ㅣ" vowel. In Korean ㅅ and ㅣ at the end always makes a sh sound. It's a fixed rule for that combination regardless of it being a single vowel or a diphthong (a combination of two vowel sounds). So any word you come across with a combination of that consonant and that vowel will have a sh sound. Hope this helps anyone looking for the answer.

My biggest problem 😭
I know right, I get so tilted learning korean because of the pronunciation. I need to constantly tell myself not to over analyse because everytime I do I get headaches. I have a feeling that being proficient in 2 languages doesn't help me much since I care a lot of perfecting the pronunciation while korean is like a bit more flexible

Sam should be Olli’s permanent Korean teacher and teacher to any new foreigner You-tuber in S.Korea. Side note, I think Olli knows more than he lets on and is being more attentive in this lesson with Sam due to Sam’s method of explaining things is such a way that resonates in Olli’s hyperactive brain. Plus, it helps that Sam is calm and let’s Olli ask questions of why this verb or that verb cannot be used if it sounds similar without interrupting him

졸리 첫 영상 올라왔을때부터 쭈욱 지켜본 시청자로서 오늘 영상 뭔가 감회가 새롭네요. 샘이 너무너무 좋은 선생님이어서 깜짝 놀라기도 했지만 올리도 뭔가 감이 잡혀가면서 조금씩조금씩 한국어가 늘어나는걸 보니 괜히 뭉클해지는.... 올리 잘 하고 있어요!! 계속 응원할게요!! 한국어로 유창하게 영남/졸리 영상에 나올 그날까지 화이팅!!! >ㅂ

I actually showed this to William and he kept looking at Ollie and calling him a baby. I asked him why and he said cause he can't speak Korean very well. I then reminded him that he can't speak Chinese or Spanish but that doesn't make him a baby.

1. Ollie is smart, he really is. He's so linguistically logical, I guess. It's seen in every single questions he popped out. It's just... He loves poop word a lot lmao 😂
2. Idk but I think Sam is the best teacher so far. Probably bcs of his fatherly figure, and Sam looks like... He's taking this seriously and he's genuinely concern towards Ollie baby 👶
