Their new series at Korean Englishman lets him go wander in Korea on his own. Like, buying stuff, ordering, commuting and making friends on his own. And to be honest, he's learning so much that way. That series is helping him learn so fast! You should all go and watch it.
I think you should just leave Ollie with a Korean who has very limited English, that way he HAS to use Korean and some people actually learn like that, where they have no choice but to USE the language and eventually get better at it. At the same time, Ollie should try and teach the Korean person English just to see what it's like to teach a language 😂😂😂
That's why so many students go to Canada or USA or um..yes Australia to learn Eng. U HAVE TO SPEAK ONLY ENGLISH, and it makes u crazy and to cry at first but, the speed you learning English is more more MORE faster when you learn Eng at korean middle school with korean teacher, like me.
@@jean4271 Yeah, that's how I leaned Spanish within a year. However, now there are so many foreign students that each nationality's students gather and homesick together. In other words: go to the countryside where you are one of the few foreigners.
@@muyou6589 THAT'S TRUE. I'm korean and it's been 1 year and 2 days after i came here Vancouver, and my town which is Richmond has a lot of Chinese. Also my school has 89 precent's Chinese and they speak Mandarin in most class time. Of course at lunch time and break time too. There are only 5 koreans in my school include me so i sometimes feel lonely because most of my friends speak Chinese, not eng, but i didnt regret that i didnt go to the other school cuz i can only speak Eng.. But still wanna have korean friends lol
I have a Korean teacher like that actually. And it helps. When you are forced to learn something, because you can't communicate well otherwise, you will learn it.

Honestly though, learning a language in this setting just isn't effective. It's much easier to just sit down by yourself and listen to an actual korean lesson on youtube. Good luck to Ollie on his journey if he ever makes it.
It definitely seems hard to focus but I've been self teaching Korean for a few months now, and watching their lessons sometimes I wish I had a Josh. A fluent speaking tutor who sits with me and explains when I dont understand on my own and forces me to practice speaking and pronunciation. Take advantage of classes and teachers yall self teaching is hard 😭

I actually disagree, I think this way - lots of speaking and practical learning, as well as fooling around and having lots of fun - is a very good way to learn. Obviously not the grammar, you do need to sit down for that, but to improve conversationally, this is the way to go.

My favorite bits are when Josh just sticks his head out of the door to laugh or give comments 😂 I have re-watched this so many times, and I die laughing each time 😭😂
Dave gave a lot of good language learning advice, but he was on the verge of something profound when he talked about going back to how you learned your mother tongue. As someone with long experience of never getting past the basics in language learning, it really helped to realize that although I picked up the basics of English the way most children do, my deeper knowledge of the language started with reading, first aloud and then learning to devour novels. That approach will do more for my learning style than any amount of language apps or textbooks.
I think Ollie has a good characteristic of a learner. He's not afraid to make mistakes and he doesn't feel too down about it. I think the teachers should be more understanding and not make fun of him. I kinda like what dave said that there are different kinds of learners of language. he also taught him the essence of the lesson and when Ollie makes a mistake, he still tells him the right thing to do. But still, Dave gave up. So, to look for more teachers! ✊ We'll get Ollie to learn korean!!
I was scrolling through comments while watching and thinking the same thing!! I learned Japanese and I was too shy to speak in Japanese so props to Ollie who always try and not afraid of mistakes!
The thing is, he makes puns in the middle of a lesson and derails/distracts the teacher for fun or on purpose. He kind of sweeps off the most regular teaches to his pace. He needs a really, _really,_ no-nonsense, level headed and resilient mentor.

His analogy of learning is like this: He goes out of his house and falling to a pot hole. The very next day he falls to the same pot hole. Sometimes after he walk out of the pot hole, he turns back and fall again to the pot hole. Sometimes he walk on a straight corridor, inside his house and suddenly fall in to a pot hole... which is on the road.. outside his house XDXDXDXD....

I think Ollie is like me. He needs to go over a lesson a couple of times, to fully understand it. He needs to read and study on his own a couple of times. He knows it, but he needs a push.
한글 배우는 외국인들이 한글 문법이 어렵다고 말한 걸 어디서 본 적이 있어요. 처음부터 어려운 문법부터 시작하면 올리가 쉽게 한국어를 배우기 어렵다 생각해요. 일상에서 계속 익히는게 가장 올리한테 적합한것같아요. 예를들어 올리의 24시간 한국어로 말하기 라든지 이런식으로해서 한국어로 직접 대화하고 겪는게 더 도움이 될것같아요. 마트에 가서 재료를 사고 요리하고 먹는 과정까지 모두 한국어로 말한다든가 등등을 하면 좋을 것같아요! 애기들이 말을 배울때 문법을 먼저 배우진 않는것처럼 단어단어 일상에서 퀴즈 하고 서서히 문장으로 말하는게 더 도움이 될것같네요
네 저는 미국인인데 여기 미국에서 대학교 다니면서 한국말을 그렇게 배웠어요. 한국 친구들한테 한단어 한단어 배웠고 친구들의 말투도 따라갔고 한국말할 기회가 있었으면 말을 완벽하지 못했지만 그냥 말을 해봤어요. 시간이 흘리면서 자신감을 얻었고 점점 배움이 자연스러워젔어요. 이제 배우기 시작한지 3년이 되었는데 문법을 아직도 많이 부족하지만 말을 편안하게 할수있어요. 그래서 저도 그건 제일 재미있고 효과적인 방법인것같아요!
제가 한국에 살지 않으니까요, 대화하기 본 적 없어요. 평소에는 자신만에게 대화해요 그럼 솔직히 많은 실수를 되는 거같아요 ;;

I actually think Ollie's doing really well learning Korean. The main reason he hasn't advanced quickly is bc he doesn't spend a lot of time studying or practicing. He makes a lot of connections and analogies to try to remember words, and he's good at applying what he learns. He's silly sometimes, but that's to make this series more entertaining. I wish Josh et al were more encouraging.

I feel as though off camera they're more encouraging, but I also think it's natural for anyone to get disparaging if you keep trying to teach someone and they keep regressing simply because they don't stick with it all the way. From what I've seen, Olly is using English as a crutch to get around, and isn't really super motivated to learn since he knows he can always fall back on that common language. Maybe they should try a concept of going 100% Korean and making it so he needs to study and use his skills instead of defaulting to English when it gets hard.
I hope he’s better IRL than he seems to be on video. He has so many resources and access to be really good I don’t understand why he seems to struggle so much.

I use these books from ttmik, and have been trying for two years to learn on my own. I think Ollie is doing much better than I. They think he is not doing well. Makes me sad. At least he is delightfully goofy!
@@vespa2223 imho, if you're not in the environment that encourage you to learn korean, it's much better to take a class than study on your own. My skill improve so much after taking the class :)
