Former Employee at Lake Piru Here! One thing I feel I should point out, Because Lake Piru is fed by larger lakes further north, the water levels rise and fall frequently. This leads to trees growing in the lake bed during a Dry period, then being submerged by the rising water levels. Felt I should help clarify what sort of 'Vegetation' was under the water, as there is a real risk of a tree Damaging Pontoon Boats, Destroying Boat Engines, Or a swimmer being snagged in the (Sometimes Multiple Inch Thick) Branches that hide in the Lake's Murky Depths. Please Remember to wear your Life vests people, you'll only miss having it once!

Her death touched me as a mom. She ensured she protected her baby until the end. It’s very much tragic she passed but she has my eternal respect for the love of her child. I would’ve done the same in that situation.

I was in a store recently, and they played the song If I Die Young, the song that Naya sang on Glee on the show dealing with Finn's death. I almost started to cry right in the store. Whether or not she should have been out in the boat and swimming if she have vertigo doesn't matter. Her death was heartbreaking.

I live in Minnesota and have been on lakes and water my entire life. Never jump out of a boat without a life jacket on when the water is too deep to stand up in and NEVER jump out of a boat and leave it unoccupied. No one can rescue you if you have a problem in the water.

Glee may have been about Rachel Berry, but Santana was the one everyone loved. The episode where she moves to New York, barges into Rachel’s apartment, and announces that she’s moving in was one of my favorites.

I think a recovery is better said than a salvage mission. Salvage sounds more like an object. Great stuff though. RIP and condolences to all.

It’s super strange for her to go swimming alone with her child if she battled vertigo that only was extreme when she was in the water. I do think it’s crazy that her family put the blame on the boat company making them responsible for her death smh even if there was a rope on the boat or even ladder who was supposed to have thrown it to her…her young son?? As adults we have to take precautions to go out on lake with no life jacket on knowing that she had health conditions in addition to having alcohol and other prescriptions in her system at what point do they question her own actions. I understand she is deceased but this could of have been prevented

I definitely remember when this happened and it felt like my heart just broke when I heard about her small child left alone in the boat with a Life Jacket On and I think he was sleeping when they found him , but I just thought about what a brilliant young Mom she must have been !! She literally gave her last breath to get her child on the boat and safely out of the water !! This is why you NEVER EVER board a boat without wearing a properly fitted, type I or II lifejacket (preferably type I because they're designed to keep you on your back in the water if you're unconscious, thus keeping your face out of the water). My mom grew up frequently going on vacations to lakes in Minnesota, and my grandpa heavily emphasized to her and her siblings that they were never to board a boat without wearing and fastening their life jackets. When I worked as a lifeguard and water safety instructor, one of the lessons I had to give kids was to always wear your life jacket (not just have it near by) when you're on a boat. It's proper water safety.

So unbelievably sad, this story hit me really hard. I’m a single mom w a young son the same age. I hav a small rv and we go camping, beach bumming etc… alone. I worry about something like this happening to us while we’re out exploring or swimming and doing outdoor activities by ourselves. This story broke my heart and makes me so sad for her young son. I’m hyper aware and careful when doing things with my son but if there’s potential for danger or harm and no one around to help me/us, then forget about it! I will not forget this tragedy.

I grew up in Piru, the small town next to the lake. It's been a very popular filming location for movies and tv shows for almost a century here. It's the same lake they filmed the Jackass movies at. Really sad this happened.

Why wouldn't she have had a life jacket on especially when there was no other adult around

I guess I’m a bit confused about the law suit. The boy had his life jacket on but hers was in the boat. Although this was a tragedy it could have been avoided by her wearing her life jacket. I can’t understand why anyone else was to blame.

I think one of the most heartbreaking things about Naya’s death was not only how well loved she was but one of the glee cast (I can’t remember who) tweeted that Cory found her and brought her home to them because when her body was found was the exact same day he sadly passed. I can’t remember the tweet word for word but it stuck with me

This touched my soul deeply. I never watched an episode of Glee,I just remember her as Gwendolyn on Family Matters. But something about her always made me very fond of her. It wasn’t until I read about her after her passing and I realized she reminded me of myself. We have the same exact birthday and quite a few other things in common. What happened to her seems clear as day to me and it breaks my heart every time her name is brought up. I pray God is holding her close❤❤❤

I've been to Lake Piru many times in my boat, the one thing you don't do is jump off a boat in this lake without another adult on board in case you get into trouble while in the water. Very bad decision. So sad she perished.

Nayas passing was heartbreaking, her sister frolicking around, holding hands with her ex~husband was heartbreaking.

More concerning is her constant change in appearance and weight. Seems like she was struggling inside. Looks like a different person in many photos.

I remember getting that notification she was missing with her son i was with my big brother and his fiancé they were looking at this house they wanted to buy . That really sucks, but how are you going to go on a boat with no guard or security with a vertigo issue? Vertigo is no joke. I had an ear issue that gave me vertigo for a week. I couldnt stand or eat without wanting to vomit. No life jacket either? That's a really sad story, but I guess we'll never know the entire truth behind this story.

I will never understand why people go do possibly dangerous things all alone. She never should have put her son and self in danger that day. She should have had someone with her especially since she was having dizzy spells and such. She put herself and her son in danger.😪

Ok now she is known to have dizzy spells and it’s said that it gets worse when in water, so why does it appear adult size life jacket is found on the boat & her son is wearing his as he should, right, so he says he his mom counts to 3 & jump in the water from the boat but tells him to get back on the boat and with her help he’s back onto the boat safely but he sees her struggling yelling help and then not seen anymore 🤷🏽‍♀️ Right, So make it make since, I’m going to assume that was her life vest on the boat, so why she wasn’t wearing it tho knowing the medical history and not only that, She is alone with her son so all safety measures should have been taken to protect herself and her only son right 🤷🏽‍♀️. Theory: after getting her son to the boat, the wind picked up & pushed the boat away from her....she couldn't get to it before getting exhausted,/panicked then drowned. Very sad - wearing her lifejacket would have saved her life or at least given her a fighting chance. Also, yes, the boat definitely should have had a "leash" for swimmers to use & a ladder. Probably the safest bet for swimming in these So Cal reservoir lakes is to be a close to shore before getting in, just in case...

There is nothing remarkable about the rich and famous. There is only one way to achieve it and it has nothing to do with talent. Some have a little, some have lots of talent. Some have absolutely zero talent, eg. Simon Cowell. Stop glorifying these individuals. Nobody is worthy of that.

So sad..I always wondered what happened exactly & while the vertigo & it worsening in water makes sense but still not 100% clarity ya know...I mean I always thought she obviously knew how to swim if she felt confident enough to jump in with no life jacket (which is soooo risky imo) but did she get a cramp or something? undertow? The current pull her under? Like what happened that she had to muster strength to get her son back on boat but not herself? Ya know because always thought well she obviously could swim since opted no life jacket so what happned in water that made her drown? But hearing vertigo does make more sense but for me still not 100% clarity...but it also makes it so much sadder to know it possibly could have been avoided😢

Why would she jump without life jacket?

When our ward took the boys outside out snowmobiling or rabbit hunting we had an adult for each scout plus some more adults to watch and take care of everything. She should have had a second adult. One for the kid and one for the boat
