Funny story, the term "jellicle cat" comes from the writer of the original script, TS Elliot. His niece was just learning to speak at the time and "jellicle cat" was her attempt to say "dear little cat"

Honestly, if Cats was an animated film and it had this style (2:15) maybe it wouldn't a masterpiece, but it'd at least be enjoyable

I saw this play in theaters. I can’t imagine how ungodly the movie would be.
Edit. Yes, the music is actually quite enjoyable and the acrobatics are insane, but the storyline just wasn’t there for me.

Every time I remember that this movie was going to be animated it makes me want to cry, the concept art looked so good why must good things get taken away from us?

Art (whether it be pictures, stories, music, video games, etc) is a completely subjective matter. If you like Cats (as a play, as a film, or both), great! If you don’t, fantastic! That’s the beauty of subjective concepts. There’s no right or wrong answer; it’s based entirely on your opinion.

I just remember when in theater “Just as good as Cats!” Was a saying for when a show was super good and surprisingly so. I mean the original Broadway show has fans man.
Now it’s seen as basically the movie devil.

The only reason I didn’t like Cats the movie was because of the way they did the story... The original musical is messy and confusing and that’s kind of what makes it fun. They kind of over explained and simplified everything in the movie so I felt that ruined it. Also, some of the designs of certain characters made it really hard to figure out which character was which. I believe they could’ve done a lot better with the CGI, yes, but I can’t say it’s the worst I’ve seen. The main thing with it is the faces, I’d say. I love the original musical- it’s my favorite actually. I just wish they would’ve captured the essence of the original and portrayed it a lot better. I just feel bad that the animators that did the incredible amount of work on that CGI had to be bashed down because it didn’t look the greatest.

You may be a theatre kid but as a film kid, this movie is horrible.

Not gonna lie, I have loved Cats the theatre production since I was very small. My parents had it on video and I would watch it over and over, singing the songs and dancing along! And I saw it live too, before it was pulled from the UK and adored that as well. I recently watched the movie and while I thought it wasn't even close to as good, I still enjoyed the music and songs. Glad to see another Cats person ❤️

I think what drew me into the musical was the songs the plot for me was kind of messy but I LOVED and I mean LOVED the songs!

As a kid my dad used to let me and my brother watch a music video each before bed and I would always choose the macavity number from cats. It was my favourite song of all time

I am a theater kid but I have never seen the actual Cats musical (In my defense, I've been rewatching Hamilton for the past year). I did, however, see the movie and I didn't even make it all the way through. In fact, just a little bit after Old Deuteronomy showed up, I disappeared. But I am a HUGE cat person. I actually watched the Cats movie with my cat. So beat that, people. Also, Illymation, you are so amazing! I love your videos anf I hope you keep up the good work (I know you will, no worries).

When I saw cats the musical I was like 8 and in the beginning it’s all dark. Then these cat people come up all around you with creepy a** glowing eyes, and the music’s all weird with dramatic clarinets. Because if this, in had a full blown PANIC ATTACK in the theatre. I determined to watch the show cause it was going off broad way in the next month or so, so I wanted to soak up all of the possibly weird energy. Other than that the musical was amazing tho.

I have had the joy of seeing some musicals in person because my friend's mom took us. One of which was phantom of the Opera. At the end of the show, she asked us what was our favorite part of the show. My friend said the romance. I looked her dead in the eyes and said the pyrotechnics. It made her laugh.

I’ve never seen Cats the musical or movie, and never had the urge to. I was all about the rolling of the eyes when Cats was brought up. Now I NEED to watch both!
I also love all the kinds of cats out there! 😻

They really should have just filmed the stage play in HD, a la Hamilton. Would have been 95 million cheaper, and would have been much better received.

The stage costumes and makeup from the DVD recording from the 90s is incredible and the movie really made a dent in any progress cats made in being seen as not so bad or weird. I love it so much and it makes me sad that most people don't and that this movie is the first experience so many are having with cats.

Back in 1996 my parents took my grandparents to London (UK) for my grandparents 51st wedding anniversary and I taged along since my gran was terrified from travelling to the UK (this was the woman who took us on a 4 hour yacht trip to through our homeport each year, but was afraid of a 90 minute ferry trip). On our second night we had frontrow seats at the performance of Cats. And for those who never witnessed the musical live, part of the sets rotates with the frontrow moving along. Also there was circular hole in the stage in front of us and we joked before the show a cat would come out; and when the show began one of the perfomers did come and crawled on the stage and we had to hold in our laughter

My mom introduced me to the musical and she said she watched it live when she was about 12 and she even bought the tapes so we could listen to it in the car! It was great on long rides because the Old Duteronemy song always made me fall asleep lol. And for some reason I sounded exactly like Rumpleteaser

Another theory for the shimbolshanks number is that it was sung by all dancers, so the song is actually in tempo, the other songs used a diffrent method and the tempo is everywhere and you can hear the orchestra struggling to stay with the singers because they are sort of doing their own thing.
But with dance you need to stay in time, it's what keeps everything together and not fall apart.

I can relate. My favorite movie is Garfield Gets Real, another cat movie that people hate because of its CGI, and because it’s just weird.

As a theater kid myself, I've been told _Cats_ is the black sheep of the theatrical community. It's a play that you either absolutely love, or you absolutely hate. I get that some things don't translate well to film, but then again _Cats_ doesn't exactly have a plot per say. It doesn't mean you can't get a good film out of it (maybe work on the script a bit), but this show was meant as an experience rather than an in-depth story. If it was an animated feature produced by Steven Spielberg (like it was originally intended), maybe it would have had a better chance at the box office. But as is, I think it'll just get a future cult following similar to _The Rocky Horror Picture Show_ or _The Room_ .
Andrew Lloyd Webber is to theater what George Lucas is to film. He can be talented, and has revolutionized the industry (if not made a lot of money), but not all of his projects hit bullseye.

I don’t go watch love theatre often because I’m always up on stage it’s a lovely experience I started when I was 9 and now I’m 11 and I’ve gotten so many shows and opportunities btw it’s not broadway but I do community theatre and I love it nothing makes me happier
Oh and also I’m a dog person but I’m highly elegiac to cats like my mother

I think part of the reason why they made a movie is because some people don’t have the time and/or money go see musical shows, and some people prefer to be able to watch stuff at home. That is just what I think is why they made a movie (at least part of the reason), I agree with the rest of the vid.

Ok, this is fair. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, no matter how many people disagree. Like, for instance, out of all Andrew Lloyd Webber's musicals, I only like Phantom of the Opera. I think its an amazing story with amazing characters, and I love it more than myself sometimes. XD But that's my opinion. and not everyone will agree.
