CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Bender (Judd Nelson) challenges Mr. Vernon's (Paul Gleason) authority and receives months of detention in return.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
John Hughes wrote and directed this quintessential 1980s high school drama featuring the hottest young stars of the decade. Trapped in a day-long Saturday detention in a prison-like school library are Claire, the princess (Molly Ringwald); Andrew, the jock (Emilio Estevez); John, the criminal (Judd Nelson); Brian, the brain (Anthony Michael Hall); and Allison, the basket case (Ally Sheedy). These five strangers begin the day with nothing in common, each bound to his/her place in the high school caste system. Yet the students bond together when faced with the villainous principal (Paul Gleason), and they realize that they have more in common than they may think, including a contempt for adult society. "When you grow up, your heart dies," Allison proclaims in one of the film's many scenes of soul-searching, and, judging from the adults depicted in the film, the teen audience may very well agree. Released in a decade overflowing with derivative teen films, The Breakfast Club has developed an almost cult-like status.

Sometimes I actually wonder if the reason Bender is in detention all the time is to escape his abusive father and that's part of why he keeps racking up the detentions.
That's a good take on his character, I could see that. I think it's also just who he is: he didn't seem like he had much in his mind, as in a plan. He just wanted to stick it to the man, go head to head with Principal Vernon, you know? Idk, it can definitely be interpreted in different ways, and I like your idea a lot
That's also what I thought. I thought he purposely wanted Vernon to give him detention. Like, I'd rather spend detention with him than at home with an abusive parent. Though if his dad found out about it then maybe it would be worse.
Like, I'd rather be verbally abused than physically.
+FLUFFERKINZ you make a very good point
Bender took the easy way out by purposely getting Saturday school.
"If he gets up, we'll ALL GET UP! IT'LL BE ANARCHY!" x'D
my gf bought me a shirt with that saying on it. Love this movie
He totally sounds like Seinfeld when he says that.
Crystal T
that made me laugh so hard
ytbeLaw 🤣😂
I love that part lmao 😂
At 1:11 Andrew did the middle finger to Mr. Vernon lmao
Yah!😂😂😂
I never noticed this...
All the times I've seen this and I never caught that!
Eulla Rodriguez I can't even notice
Eulla Rodriguez nevermind, I think I noticed it now
He probably prefers to be there than to be at home getting beatings from his dad. I just realized that's probably why he's so cool with the detentions.😿
That being said, this scene is the funniest in the movie IMO. I especially like how at end he knows the guy is gonna say I'm cracking skulls as though he's been there so many times he knows his usual threats
it's kinda like why there's some people that don't mind prison because it's too hard for them to live in the real world. But that's just the easy way out and him purposely getting Saturday school is just the easy way out too.
MrDodger3222 Thats easy to say when your not the one getting the life beat out of you by your drunken father everyday.
MrDodger3222 Easy? You ever been in prison?
Jazz Solo Cup Horseshit dude. That's what the police are for.
Some say he's still serving detention.
Certainly Molly Ringwald's career is.
+ValorPictures Whatever happened to her? After Pretty In Pink she really fell off the radar
+samsquanch1996 She's going to be in Jem and the Holograms this fall.
lol. I wouldn't be surprised if Bender is still in detention.
So the legend goes
Bender is so bad ass lol. "Are you through?" "No." "I'm doing society a favor." "So?"
"That's another one right now! I've got you for the rest of your natural-born life if you don't watch your step! You want another one?"
"You got it! You got another one right there! That's another one, pal!"
Ricky M You through?
Not even close, *bud*!
Ricky M Good! You got one more right there!
Love it how Brian's keeping count... awww 😁
@ṼOLTẲGE 😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣thats clever asf
MsMimilala and only for Vernon to call him Pee-Wee
Hookem horns!
He is also in the math club as he said before 😂
He's such a cutie 😊
2:56 "I'm cracking skulls." The way Nelson's character mouths it 😂
2:57
Judd Nelson had an unforgettable face... It's almost powerful.
reminds me Al Pacino
It’s those nostrils. 👃🏻
His nostril flares just bugged me 😂
You think..... I remember those memories.... I got into trouble for skipping class and run away from school because I don't like principal teacher at all.....
He’s the best part of this movie.
ive never noticed that andrew flipped him off at 1:12
Lol
Caylin Coleman Me either
oh yeah. i just saw that lmao
+Caylin Coleman good eye
Wow, Good Eye 👌
Not even close, bud.
Good. You got another one right there.
So
+Olivia Rhianne love that part!!!!
Shut up peewee.
You really think I give a s-t?
Every scene with Bender is a masterpiece.
Same with Vernon.
I love Bender's expressions and the way he says his comebacks here.. He knows he's digging himself deep into shit and you can tell he doesn't want anymore and that he's having inner turmoil, but he doesn't want to step down to Vernon or show the other kids any docile behavior. I love it! Judd killed this scene.
Fun fact, Judd (25 at the time) went to an actual high school pretending to be a student before doing his part in this movie to get into character ANd got in trouble/sent to the principals office. LOL I think that's fuckin gREAT! xD he's a legend.
Wasn't there a theory that because Bender's dad was abusive, he used detention to stay out of the house? I dunno, was just something I heard. In that case, he DID want more detention.
I always thought Vince McMahon from wrestling back in the day kind kind of reminded me of this principle from this film
very very well articulated. yes yes
if u got here through Stadsapen you won an hour of training with me!
Words can't explain how much I love this scene. Such a good movie.
This is funny! I can imagine Bart saying this to Skinner!
Skinner: You want another one Simpson
Yeah 😌😌😌👍👍👍😂😂😂😀😀😀🙃🙃🙃🤣🤣🤣
@@Jabarie898 why did Vernon said "Go visit John Bender in 5 years" ?
@@-chenlanying5818 he was basically telling everyone that Bender would be a nobody/bum in 5 years. That he's that typical loser who peaks at Highschool.
LOL...2 months of giving up every Saturday to come babysit some kid. whos got who here?
The principal really seems like he genuinely enjoys it though. I don't think this dude cares lol
He’s getting paid overtime
If I were Mr Vernon and had to babysit Bender, I would simply take him out fishing or for a round of golf at the municipal golf course and show that there's more to life than his rebellious lifestyle and dysfunctional family.
@@CO84trucker yes you would be a good teacher. i always like when my teachers did me things. Not just fishing or golf but still acts of genuine kindness really helped me ...

"Not.Even.Close.BUD!" . "You want another one, huh." " YES."
Hahaha I love Judd Nelson.
Is bad that I've never seen this movie?
Molly Ringwald is so cute in this movie who agrees? that " cut it out " was very sweet:)
+sakusia it was super adorable that Claire was constantly trying to protect Bender from Vernon.
Judd Nelson is so damn funny in this film. One of my favorite lines in the whole film;
"That's very clever sir, but what if there's a fire? I think violating fire codes, and endangering the lives of children would be unwise at this juncture in your career, sir."
LMAO! Totally nails him. The funny thing about the "Bender" character is that he's such a dirt bag, but you can tell he's very intelligent, and if he applied himself, he could really be successful at anything he did.
Well SAID!!!!! Good observations too ;)
True but unfortunately it isn’t that straight forward. I’m studying to be a secondary teacher an yes, he could apply himself and has displays own characteristics of intelligence for it however, with this negative school environment of stereotypes and made worse by the principle’s negative and degrading attitude towards the students, top that with Bender having to deal with his abusive home life, combined, this can lower a student’s motivation to learn and sense of belonging. Feeling isolated can have devastating lasting effects and so, it can affect a students academic performance. Teachers failing to adhere to student’s differences in learning and recognising that many factors such as a student’s home life, family’s financial circumstances, good teacher & student relationships, it’s almost impossible to expect a student, such as Bender, to perform and work to the best of their abilities. Also, teachers, parents, students and the community should all do their part and their best to encourage and promote education as quality teachers can only do so much too in their role in the student’s life. If our culture’s mindset shifts to viewing education as significant then this encourages students and learners to gain the motivation to learn. Unfortunately here, Bender has been failed by the teacher (the principle), his peers, family and perhaps the community also (as it may be possible he’s been in trouble with the law). If Bender had these factors in his life fulfilled, it would help his progress in school further and allow him to become a better citizen in society as the educational system is supposed to provide student’s with the skills and knowledge to tackle their current era. In this case, the 21st century.
Well lookit you, watchin' the movie and stuff. * Puts hands on hips, nods head *
This fella's goin places.
I think we all knew at least one kid when we were in school, who was like that. LOL I sure have!
Yeah and he moved it right back realizing he was right
2:03 still makes me laugh all these years later. That delivery is awesome.
"Not...even...close...BUD!!!"
Incredible acting the hate in his eyes is palpable
My theory of Vernon is when he started out teaching, he was loved and respected by the kids. Then, like anyone who wanted to further their career, he took an administrative position, and the kids started seeing him as the enemy, so it made him bitter and angry. Carl, the wise janitor, basically says it all: 'The kids haven't changed, you have'. And he's right.
Boy, that's good!
He's right about kids not changing. I went to school in the 90s and I can tell you myself and other kids did lots of dumb, stupid things. The only difference is we didn't post it on social media because that wasn't around. When my parents would find out some of the stuff I did, they'd laugh it off and tell me they did the same stuff when they went to school, too. It's kind of comforting in a way, you realize that everyone experiences most of the same things you do growing up.
"If he gets up,we'll all get up!It'll be anarchy!"
"No.…So?…Yes!" Lol Bender is so funny!:)
This movie looks good! Sadly, I've only heard of it but never seen it! 😔
"I think violating fire codes and endangering the lives would be unwise at this juncture in your career, sir." Haha man, I've always loved that line!
Same
Definitely. And the one about thinking about a career in the janitorial arts
John Hughes frequently made some of his characters say out-of-character or out-of-age things more typical of adults to comical effect. "I'm about to rescind my offer!" I remember that line. Might be from Super 8, though, which was another sweet youth film - not by Hughes though.
"screws fall out, the world's an imperfect place." Is mine xD
"Not even close BUD!"
Gets me every time.😂😂🥰
Shut Up Pee-Wee! That had Me Dyin 😂😂😂
its funny in NOT ANOTHER TEEN MOVIE too "shut up wang chung...cry me a river d%ck face" lol
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Hughes was really good at finding ways to put these actors in scenes that were believable, and letting them go to work. As rebellious as Bender is, you can tell he's not happy, nor enjoying it. It's falso bravado and Judd Nelson did a really good job of pulling it off.
It's an immortal performance by the entire cast.
Cracked up when he said, "Show dick some respect!" XD
"You really think I give a shit." "Another."
"Cut it out!"
"Shut your mouth Wang Chung"
lmao
😭😭🤣

EVERYBODY WANG CHUNG TONIGHT
calo10able your mother is a?
I love how Claire keeps protecting Bender. Too bad he didn't notice and was busy harassing her.
But they dig each other.
He did notice, but even by this scene, he wants to impress her.
The irony of Bender was he easily could have been in with the cool kids and jocks if he had had a different upbringing. He was tall and handsome and funny and could dunk a basketball easily. These 5 were all pressured into living up to their high school stereotypes until that day.
"shut up pee wee!"
i love this timeless classic
“If he gets up, we’ll all get up. It’ll be anarchy”
I love this line so much

"Not even close BUD!" Lolz
Good! You got one more right there!
Lmfao That's my favorite line.
I just thought that maybe the reason why he got all those detentions is because didnt want to be around his parents so much. I mean if you think about it, he gets verbaly and physically abused at his house. So maybe he feels like detention is the place where he can get away from being hurt and just for at least like 6 hours.

I love how he was uncertain about whether he wanted to keep going until Molly Ringwald's character told him to stop and seemed concerned, and then he got all gung-ho about it. Showed that he really was playing the role of the tough guy trying to impress. Very well constructed scene.
Is this how Bart Simpson got his famous catchphrase?
Hmmm I wonder the same thing too.
I assume so considering the fact that this was made before the Simpsons even aired on tv this was in 1985 and the Simpsons was out in 1989
Jillian Barker Bart first said eat my shorts in 1990
Eat my jorts.
joseph gover no Nancy Cartwright said eat my shorts a her school parade in stead of their school name and that’s he show of eat my shorts
And then the Simpsons stole the phrase and Vernon's character for their principal smh
ikr? smh
And Family Guy stole Claire's character for Meg.
They aren't "stealing" anything. Every character can be said to belong to one archetype or another.
Edgehead10075 Lets just say that they are both hated by school bullies.
Simpsons "borrowed" old cliches that's all lol
I think we can all agree that 'The Breakfast Club' was one of Matt Groening's biggest inspirations. I mean, think about it. Bender was named after John Bender, and where do you think Bart gets "eat my shorts" from? 😂
Back in the day when almost everyone smoked, "eat my shorts" meant "eat my cigarette butts." Still does. Not eat my underwear. "I call shorts on that Marlboro." When one was done puffing, as a courtesy one would hand the leftover cigarette to the 'caller.' Jr. high school stuff...

We just watched this movie in health class the other day, and everybody was cracking up. I was thinking "Why haven't I seen this movie before"?
Omg... Same here I watched this movie at my class since 5th grade I can't remember
"You really think I give a shit" - best line
I've always loved the moment after the door slams shut (0:04) and we hear the metal chair clanging around, and Vernon's distant "Dammit!!" [followed by unintelligible bitching]. Sounds so real! 😂
You say, "Wow, that's a lot of detention." I say, "That's a lot of time a guy doesn't wanna go home to an abusive father and show the preppy kids that they can do a lot more than just think 'Another mark on my permanent record!'"
I like how the nerd is the only one who really knows how to get along with everybody.
“Instead of going to prison you’ll come here” Prison could be alluding to his home. This is why I think he continues adding on the detentions. His abusive home life might be too much for him, so detention is a way to escape, and get his anger out of his system by pestering the other attendees of the session. This film has so much to do with the characters life outside of school and almost everything they do can be referencing a way of their life.
"It'll be anarchy!" 😂
Paul Gleason as Mr. Vernon. Literally the best TV vice principal ever. Tough as nails, but fair. He also made a cameo appearance in the A Teens music video Dancing Queen reviving his role from Breakfast Club. He passed away May 27, 2006. Such a memorable actor.

Because you hate the teacher, it gets lost on what a brilliant acting job the guy did. It did so good that you almost see him as real and everyone else as acting. He is essential to this film working, and he put on an amazing performance.
"If you hate the character, the actor did their job." I don't remember where I heard that, but it's a maxim that is true of every film and show you'll ever watch. The more you love or hate any character, that means the actor is doing their job.
