- So I think perhaps the trend of following other people’s tutorials is ~over~, but I really wanted to cut my own hair so I decided to turn on a KRplus hair cutting tutorial and have at it. Or, as the title suggests, try having at it. I also dyed my hair back to my old color for a full hairstyle transformation. What do you think? Would you try this??

This is why you should always cut right BELOW the rubber band and not above. So your scissors cant go up at an angle. The rubber band acts as a leveler.
the hair from the back would still be longer as it's been pulled round though
It would be best to section the hair into 3 sections; back of head, left side of head, & right side of head. Start with the back & cut below the rubber band using hair trimmers instead of shears(scissors). Then use the back as a guide to blend the sides of the head to the back.
I did this and it worked really well! Just like three inches off. Really easy to level and it didnt need much fixing.

I felt the pain of the back being uneven. I cut my own hair all the time, but I don't have anyone to fix it after so I just let it look weird and say "It fits my personality. A bit wayward and definitely not straight"

Not really? There's a difference between showing people how *you* do something on yourself and teaching someone how to do something in general. People often have weird quirks in the way they do things on themselves that DEFINITELY wouldn't apply to other people and shouldn't necessarily be taught lol. In the case of the video, it was both a tutorial and how she did it on herself, but that's not always the case. And maybe it shouldn't be, seeing how Safiya's hair was considerably thicker than the tutorial person's hair, and that kinda botched the process.

this is what i like about your videos, they mostly follow gimmicky ideas but instead of having 10:01 minutes of filler and screaming and self-promotion, you just do it so thoroughly and with evaluation and reflection so that its actually decently entertaining to watch, and i think a lot of younger viewers can benefit from consuming balanced content that doesn't promote bad ideas or empty clickbait or sellouts

Hairstylist here, if you pull the hair forwards like that with the pigtails, your front will be longer than the back. That’s not a good look. If you pull all of it back and have them in the back you will will get an A-line type of cut. But of course it won’t be the same as if a hairdresser cuts it. Just don’t pull it forward and you won’t get a mullet. Hope that helps!

I've been cutting my own hair for about a year now. Also looked at a few tutorials of pros showing simple ways to do refresh on your hair.
Since then my hair has grown like 3 times my normal length, which I was never able to get longer, until I cut it my self. It is also healthier and looking pretty good. Only I do layers. Started to think about straight a few weeks back. Glad I bumped in to your video. 👍🏼

I followed this same tutorial the other day, haha! The quarantine is getting to us. Mine turned out decent, but I couldn't get a straight cut in the back using her angle technique. It still ended up being rounded in the back, but it's blended nicely!

ive cut my own hair for like 5 years now, im an old pro at my style now, i use the unicorn technique, using my bang length as my guide and cut at a slight angle so i get defined layers, always cut wet, and use a handheld mirror to clean up the back, mine is also a slightly shorter bob than saf's

I'm glad this appeared on my KRplus suggestions, because I was thinking about following the same tutorial (I have the same hair type as you).
Usually when I do my own hair trimming what I do is a multiple pigtail/ponytail approach.
I trim the whole thing in one high ponytail and then get the length I want with the two pigtails before putting it in a low ponytail and cutting it.
Makes it more even in the back and easier to trim all around.
This looks pretty good for a first go though!

Love, love this tutorial! My hair is long, with Covid19 and the shutdown of many businesses, I have my husband cut my hair. I wash, brush out, and he uses the leveler in the garage against my back to cut the hair straight across. Overall, hair length managed!

I did a home hair cut on myself when lockdown first hit. Not quite as severe a change as Safia did, but a decent length change and it actually turned out okay. I highly recommend the "uniciorn horn" method as it makes seeing your hair easier and it also means that when you let the hair down that the back won't be so choppy. Definitely invest in a pair of hairdresser scissors as they are made for this kind of job, as opposed to kitchen or craft scissors. I think Saf did a good job on her first try, and i'm by no means an expert at all, just speaking from personal experience.

i saw this vid and about about a year later i cut my own hair. did it with 4 pigtails bc u said doing with 2 was too thick. i did it about the same length as you. came out prefect and didn't have to get it fixed up by a professional (EDIT- did it dry and still cut in the front) I also then dyed my hair a bright red. btw just use vaseline instead of that dyed blocker and make sure to use it very generously. like my friend told me just to cover my whole face just in case and that ended up being a good call

I love your videos Safiya, they're always so entertaining. I cut my own short hair and it seems to work ok but I don't have a blunt cut so it's not so long and short bits aren't so obvious....I always thought Lord Farhquar was quite stylish actually, in a short, big chinned kinda way!
Thank you so very much for this video...I got "locked down" in Jakarta (where I had been visiting my daughter) on 12th March 2020...my tablets for a hypothyroid condition got over...as the months passed, my already scant hair dropped so badly that I was convinced I would soon be bald...I celebrate my 64th birthday at the end of January and was desperate to look decent...searched on KRplus, found your video, watched it, and did the deed...successfully...you cannot imagine how much better I feel now...God Bless you! 🙏👍👏❤️

I used the same method to chop off like 70% of my hair last summer. I thought it looked okay but when I went to the hair stylist she made it very evident I fucked up lol
So i got cut at work (filmset) by an awardwinning hairdresser- a sleek bob. Then a few months later i went to one at home for a quick touch up on the ends. She asked when i got it cut last. I said, a few months, and that i usually do it myself -bc i do usually do so, but she looked at my award-winner made cut and said "i can tell." And im sitting there thinking like "bitch no you cannot." I told the award winner the same thing and she just shrugged and said i did a neat job.
Hairdressers live out by making us believe we look awful by doing their jobs ourselves... if we believed we could do a great job they wouldn't have their jobs.
