That pen in the eye trick is taken directly from an instructional video. What he completely skipped is the context, which is the reason for using specifically that little plastic cup of coffee creamer and not some other liquid: you're at a Cafe, and you want to freak someone out and didn't bring anything with you so you have to use the stuff available at the Cafe. Magic instructional videos can be really weird sometimes. The old guy showing you how to do it was a charming old goofball, though.
